I stumbled across this great archive of Victorian and Edwardian Photos that includes lots of dated portrait photos which one can glean a lot of good costume details from...

    Wow - this is great! Just keep in mind while you are looking that the fair dates are 1842 - 1862.
    There is a great one with Queen Victoria circa 1861.

      Further, I suppose we should also remember one of the other classic caveats of studio portraiture...

      ....what you are seeing is usually well-primped for the camera, and occasionally done with props and costumes that are not the natural garb of the subject. (...although it's not as bad as some 16th century painted portraits, where I've seen charges for adding "diverse rich furs and costly jewels" to a merchant portrait who clearly didn't own the stuff...)
