Hoop Skirts

Okay--I'd love to have some good advice on how to walk, sit, dance, etc. with a hoop skirt. I'm going to be wearing one to Dickens, and also a lot more this month after that for various other events--tips?

This is me doing my best.

You know how some women kind of roll their hips when they walk -- sometimes on purpose, oftentimes not? You might not do that already, but still, don't do that. Keep your pelvis straight. It looks LOADS better than having this bell-like contraption swaying all over the place.

Other than that . . . if your hoops and skirts aren't so long that you have to worry about tripping on them, it's really not that different at all. You can sit and dance and walk just fine, without having to adjust anything.

Practice walking, and most particularly sitting. Nothing more embarassing than sitting down and - sproing! - your skirt is in your face and your nether limbs (appropriately sheather in pantaloons, but - still,) on view to the wide wor;d.

Mind you, I've never worn hoops with a dress (the few times I've worn a dress) but don't you have to put the back side of the hoops up on the chair with you to avoid that?

So basically, practice makes perfect? Is there any technical information that goes along with how to do any of this?

Yes, practice makes perfect. Hoops accentuate everything you do, so you have to be very concious of the way your body is moving- unless you're Miss Finching, in which all hoop rules fly out the door.

          It's all physics.

Push in on one side, the other side springs out. One side goes down, the other side goes up (sometimes *really* up).

TRY to avoid (though it's tough, I know) running into things that are gonna catch or tip over, and yes, when you're sitting down, gather all the hoops up in the back of the seat instead of trying to flatten them against the legs - that doesn't work.

Y'all make me look silly. So much I didn't think of!

    But I love you all.

You *do not* need to lift your hoop to sit down- in fact it looks quite tacky to do so in public. Sit on the edge of your chair (as the other lady said "perch"). Do not lean back or try to sit to far on to the chair and you should be fine.

It also helps to take small steps (think heel-toe-heel-toe) while walking at a leisurely pace. Try not to sway your hips. =)

        Hope this helps a bit!

Okay...clarification on hip swaying--side-to-side? Forward to back?... Sorry...I get confused with walking terminology I guess... perching I'm good at though! Thanks!

May I chime in at this late date and say that this is getting unnecessarily complicated? Because really, the whole purpose of wearing a hoop is to make it look like you have no lower limbs. You do not walk. You glide. Your hoops do not sway. It's like you're on roller skates under there. Just practice walking in the hoop and try not to make it move at all.

            Simple.

            Good luck and have fun!

I always cheat, and walk with my hands laying gently on the skirts, not exactly to my sides, a little in front of that. it's an easy way to keep them quiet.

when sitting, I go on toe first, step back to the chair, and sit.
this usually lifts the skirts just a bit, moves them slightly over the chair, and you can sit on them.
and perching sideways I find is easier.
