While I really do understand about wanting to hear yourself - I feel the same way about french hoods - please remember that we are going for an overall look - that of middle class England - 1840 - 1860. I really can't justify having the whole of fair go to hats instead of bonnets. What I will suggest is that those of you that absolutely can't abide bonnets - email me at costumes@redbarnproductions.org with your reasons why your character wouldn't wear a bonnet with a picture or 2 of what you are thinking about and we'll talk. The problem with Hats is that they were, for the Dickens' period crowd, very trendy, very young and very expensive. They were also very Parisan and American. So it can tend to take away from a middle class English look. There are a bunch of different shapes for bonnets and no one said you have to wear the Indian Elephant style bonnet that is so popular (since they are made in felt, in every color, and easy to find.) You can cut back on the brim, flatten or expand to suit your head shape, and don't forget you can put decoration on the inside as well as the outside. Anyone willing to wear a turbin with a scarf draped over the crown and around the throat? Its a little more 1835-ish, but it could work. Do the same with a hat if you want or need to wear it (pending approval by Liz!!!) Its Winter! Just avoid anything that reads: Gibson Girl, Scarlett O'Hara, or Flower Pot (a style of the 1880's I happen to love.) Hope this helps.
