The Dickens Fair Reunion Ball
Saturday, January 2, 2010
Masonic Lodge of San Mateo Ballroom
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94401
Doors Open: 6:45 pm
Dance Lesson: 7:00 pm
Formal Dancing Begins: 8:00 pm
Tickets at the door: $20.00
Band: Bangers & Mash
PEERS’ Website: http://www.peers.org
Ball Website: http://www.peers.org/12th2010.html

Dance, sing, feast and game at the season’s loveliest old-fashioned holiday party – a 12th Night Ball hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Bangers and Mash, the Bay Area’s most irresistible country dance band, will play a variety of Viennese and rotary waltzes, polkas, mazurka waltzes, schottisches, the Lancers, reels, and other set dances popular in the early and mid-19th century (As usual, all set dances will be taught or called and partners are not required. Indeed, introductions to partners will be cheerfully provided!).

Suggested costume is evening or day dress from 1837 through 1870 (the heyday of Dickens’ literary career), any class. Modern evening dress is, as always, a completely acceptable substitute for period costume, and there is no dress code for the evening. Ladies, if you’re wearing a ball gown or evening gown, please be sure to bring a wrap since the ballroom will be cold before the dancing starts. Once we start dancing, the ballroom warms up beautifully!

Intermission entertainment includes an interactive performance by the Peerless Music Hall and a special performance by our guest of honour, Mr. Charles Dickens. Gamers may enjoy either an intellectual game of whist or a rollicking game of Wink, and the evening will conclude with a glorious Hallelujah Chorus sing-a-long.

To sustain us through this vigorous evening of dancing, punch and a light Old English snack buffet will be served (As usual, your potluck contributions to Mrs. Fezziwig’s kitchen are very welcome).

If you have any questions or need more information, please email peers@peers.org or call (510) 522-1731.

I hope your preparation for faire this year is going fantastically.

So I'm hoping that I can join you lovely people next year as a performer and I've been fooling around during the holidays designing costumes that will (hopefully!) be faire-approved. I've read the missives and the Costume Guidelines on the actual Dickens site, but I was wondering... just how essential is it that the costumes are jewel-toned? I've found a fantastic fabric on Reproduction Fabrics.com that I love, but it's a floral cream-coloured. Is my costume likely to be rejected because it is not plum, burgandy etc?

Thanks very much and I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Second, I kept stepping on my skirt while dancing. I know that ballgowns were typically shorter than day dresses, but not by how much. Any advice on the "correct" length for a day dress that will also work for dancing? Currently my skirt is about 2" shy of floor length.

I'm not very well-versed on how period-correct the white "nighties" are -- but in my mind, they would make excellent chemises regardless. (Besides, nobody who wants to look truly "period-correct" is going to go around exposing a whole lot of chemise. The only exceptions I can think of are the ladies of Mad Sal's, but then again, these garments would probably be too "stiff" for them -- and anyway, we don't WANT ladies on Mad Sal's stage to cover up, do we? But I'm rambling . . .)

1. Kim Y. has great tutorials on her site for cutting and then covering a straw hat with fabric and trimmings, and also making bonnets out of Duct tape and cereal boxes, both excellent and practical ideas. $

2. Buying one on eBay and re-trimming it. $$

3. Cutting, shaping, and then spray painting a straw hat a dark color, then trimming it. $

My question is..... would the last one be feasible, and pass muster? I want to be as realistic as possible for the least amount of cash. Does anyone have any advice they could share? I have made a couple bonnets out of straw hats, but they look very summer-y, and I was looking to make something a little more winter-y.
Greetings! I'm taking my boyfriend to the Dicken's Faire for his very first time this Dec. 15th. Until I am certain he is "into" the Faire, I'd rather not plunk down a lot of cash making him a suitable outfit. He's a bit of a clothing snob, however, so the usual "dark slacks, white shirt, vest " thing won't really get him excited. I'd like to deck him out nicely and help him with getting in the spirit of things.

Does anyone know of a costume rental place that has a GOOD selection of appropriate clothing, without being outrageously priced? My bf is 6'4" and a 40" chest and wears an extra large hat size--so it would have to be a place with a good selection in order to find something that will fit him.

Or perhaps someone on this list has some older garb they would be willing to part (for a reasonable price) with that would fit him?

Three outside pockets, and one inside. Sold to me as a Men's 2X, it fits like a 3X or 4X (Omar the tent maker size) 28" across the back underarm-to-underarm, Sleave length from top of shoulder is 27" Professionally made coat by Brassada, it's been worn only to try it on. Great for middle class characters of *substantial* size.

Two Men's L half-button band-colar long sleave shirts for middle/lower class characters.
These are solid and professionally made, and not cheap home sewn garments. They have been worn, but not mistreated, and are clean, if a trifle wrinkled from storage.
- One is a blue & white vertical stripe cotton with solid white band collar and one patch (dungaree) pocket on the breast. (could be removed) By Wah Maker, well known maker of western wear for 19th century reenactors. Gunmetal balck buttons probably should be changed for pearl, bone, horn, or glass; but might pass costume inspection anyway.
-The other is Irish *linen flannel* in a green and tan vertical stripe with a matching band collar and an a very proper *inset* breast pocket that buttons. Plastic buttons that don't do a bad job of simulating horn buttons.

hi all! I will be going to the Fair for the first time this year and want to make an acceptable outfit. I will just be a visitor, so it's not *so* crucial that my garment is perfect, but if I'm going to do it I want to do it right!

I'm going to use Simplicity 3721 (http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3727) but with the pagoda sleeves of either Simplicity 9761 or 3721 (http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3727). I bought my fabric yesterday, but now I'm having second thoughts. It's from the home decor section, so it's a little bit on the heavy side. It is 100% cotton though. I'm worried it's going to be too heavy. It's probably the weight of a light curtain or a tablecloth. It's really pretty - a pale gold with pale-er gold stripe with a tiny line of moss green stripe going through it.

Has anyone else used home dec fabric for their dresses? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Queen's bloomers sell for £4,500

A pair of bloomers that once belonged to Queen Victoria have been sold for £4,500 at an auction in Derby.

The knickers have a 50in (127cm) waist and date from the 1890s, which indicates the monarch had a large girth as she approached her old age.

It was thought the bloomers would fetch £500 but a Canadian buyer spent £4,500 on the pants which are monogrammed with VR for Victoria Regina.

The knickers had been owned by a lady-in-waiting to the Queen.

They had remained in the woman's Lincolnshire family until now.

'Very wide girth'

Auctioneer Charles Hanson said: "These pants, considering their provenance and pedigree, are very exciting... we know that they are hers [Queen Victoria]."

Mr Hanson said the bloomers were an interesting piece of social history that indicated Queen Victoria was "a very big lady of quite small stature with a very wide girth".

The knickers are made from a fine cotton and are hand-made.

A chemise with a 66-inch (167cm) bust, which also belonged to the UK's longest-reigning monarch, sold for £4,000 while her nightdress went for £5,500 at the auction.

URGENT MESSAGE FROM RED BARN PRODUCTIONS ABOUT
THE DICKENS FAIR AND THE COW PALACE

State Senator Leland Yee Ph.D., under pressure
from the Daly City Council, is proposing to
“surplus” the Cow Palace and sell it to Daly
City. Daly City will then sell most of the land
to condo developers and pocket the
profits. Letter writing WILL stop this. Senator
Yee has ONLY heard from Daly City. Let him know
you oppose selling the Cow Palace!!!

Here is a link to Senator Yee's website and his
press release on the legislation he submitted
Friday February 22nd to the State Legislature,
(no voting date is set - but it could be
soon). This bill wrongly proposes to SELL the Cow Palace to Daly City!
<dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp

We must defeat SB1527 or the Dickens Fair will likely die.
It would take years, if it’s even possible, to
relocate and resurrect the Dickens Fair.
Red Barn Productions has studied all the venues
that could physically host the Dickens Fair and
there are NO other places that currently
work. All are either too expensive, too small,
are unavailable between Thanksgiving and
Christmas OR require unaffordable retrofits in
order to be permitted for public assembly. So,
Save the Cow Palace and Save The Dickens Fair. It's that simple AND
serious.

Here's the scoop:

The Cow Palace has a perfectly good plan to meet
the needs of the local community and Daly City by
providing them 13 acres of its’ unused
land. Yes, rock concerts bring public problems,
according to Daly City, but they also bring
public $$$ to the local community. Senator Yee's
Legislation SB1527 is doubly wrong. It proposes
we, as California State Citizens, sell OUR Cow
Palace to Daly City so they can bulldoze it and
profit by selling it to private developers. If
that isn't bad enough, SB1527 also deprives us of
our RIGHT to use a facility that WE own!!

This is like selling off a chunk of Golden Gate
Park because a nearby neighborhood proclaims
“unanimously” it needs more space for
development. It doesn't work that way. We get
to vote too...by writing letters and emails and
calling his office. Officials can't just decide
to take a public asset and sell it…unless it is
truly “surplus”. The Cow Palace is not
“surplus”. We must stop this proposed sell-off of our property.

Here's what you can do to stop SB1527 and SAVE THE COW PALACE:

#1 Act Quickly. Senator Yee may believe he is
serving the public, but he has only heard from
Daly City. Let’s give him the other 99% of the
picture before he gets any further down this road.

Write a Letter
Write to Senator Yee today. Quickly. Early
letters are more powerful. Send personal letters
to the address below the sample text at the
bottom of this notice. Get it in today’s mail, so
he receives it on Monday or Tuesday.

Write an Email
Personal emails may be sent via his website
“contact” at page:
<legplcms01.lc.ca.gov/PublicL...pup.aspx

Emails are not as good as snail mail letters, but
they are also effective. Be sure to write in
“SB1527” as it is so new it is not on his issue list. …

Call the Office
You can pick up the phone and call his office,
see
<dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp

YOU DO NOT NEED TO MENTION THE DICKENS
FAIR. SIMPLY VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION TO
SB1527. That’s it! Give reasons only if you
want. The important thing is to contact him NOW.

#2 IF YOU LOVE THE DICKENS FAIR, forward this
message to groups, friends and individuals and
ask them to contact Senator Yee immediately.

#3 IF YOU LIVE in Senator Yee’s District #8 - see
map on his site:
…Contact him AS one of his constituents,
(District 8 includes most of San Francisco in the
West and South, and goes most of the way down the
Peninsula). It is a very large district!

Sample Letter:

Dear Senator Yee,

As a California Citizen, and resident of (…your
city…), I object to your proposed legislation to
“sell the California Cow Palace”. While you may
be responding to the needs of Daly City, please
respect my rights to use this public
facility. It may need work, but how many
California public buildings need upgrading? If
you want to help Daly City bring in new
supermarkets and shopping to the area, let the
Cow Palace deal directly with developers and Daly
City to make use of the 13 acres the Cow Palace
doesn't need. This will preserve my rights while
helping the lives of local area citizens. It
will also continue the flow of millions of
dollars into the local economy annually. These
revenues, generated by me and many thousands of
others who use the Cow Palace, also help pay for
police to patrol the area year-round as well as during big events.

Please reconsider SB1527. There is a better way
to help Daly City and Bayshore than destroying
the Cow Palace. I use it every year and plan to
continue to use it for many years to come. It is
not “surplus”; it is a vital community and cultural asset.

Thank you,

Signed,

(you)

I've always known that from a costuming standpoint, I have been blessed to live in the greater Los Angeles area. Sure, every major urban area (like the SFO Bay area) has its collection of fabric, sewing notion, and thrift stores... But with the exception of New York, nowhere in the United States has the sheer breadth and depth of resources that L.A. does. The Los Angeles "garment district" downtown has square blocks of fabric and sewing supplies at prices that are well below half of typical retail. This includes a whole block of buttons, beads, and jewelry findings; major "tailoring supply" houses with fine woolens (www.bblackandsons.com)(and a "remnant" table); dozens of outlets for ribbon, trim, and lace; and fabric stores ranging from cheap cottons to upholstery grade silks and leather.

Outside the garment district are other resources...amazing vintage, used, and thrift clothing stores (Aardvark's!)...one-stop shops for theatrical makeup on Hollywood Blvd...International Silks and Woolens...great upholstery fabric outlets near Western & Melrose...Western Costume out in the valley....and of course, Farthingale's for your corset and hoop supplies in Santa Monica.

I'd always thought that more of my friends from the Dickens fair ought to get down here to use the resources....but to be fair, it is a long way to drive and if you don't know the town....it can be quite a learning curve to find what you are looking for....

But what if you could get from SFO to LA (and return) for $35 or less (without having to drive)? Might it be worth it then?
How about if you had a native guide who could show you around the garment district on a one or two day expedition?

If there were a few folks who might be interested in such a trip in March, I might be of a mind to sketch out the details and offer to help with coordination. Of course, if some of our LA Dickens brethern would like to join in the madness... That might be fun too.

There is a local corsetry class that I'm planning on taking, but that's not until at least August, and I'd like to start on my dress before then if I can. The sooner I start, the more time I have for all the details!
Am I better off just buying a corset for starters? (esp. since there's a sale going on?) Thanks!

Last year's boots won't work anymore, seeing as the sole on one of them was completely split by the end of the run. Now it's crunch time, and I've been so preoccupied with getting the rest of my garb together that I'd all but forgotten about the footwear I need.

Therefore, if anyone has boots they would like to sell or just get rid of, I'll gladly take them. I tend to wear size 8 1/2 and upwards, but nothing more than a 10 -- last year's were a size 10, and they were a little roomy. I'll take wide sizes, too; in fact, that's probably even better.

I'd like to have them before this Saturday, if possible; but early Sunday morning is doable, too. Please PM me if you're able to help me out.

So now that we've all put away our Dickens and the Christmas stuff - are you ready to start thinking about DCF 2008?
Here's the tentative line up for classes;

Chemise and Drawers
Hoop skirt/petticoat
Corset
Garibaldi blouse
Skirt
Swiss belt
Dress
Classes in men's items will be coming as well as a class on distressing clothing and over hauling thrift store finds.
I have talked with Lynn Combs and it looks like Wed nights will be the best. She has graciously offered us space at Vallejo Musical Theater. We'd start at 6:30 or 7 and going till 10 each night. If we can pull it all together starting in mid Feb would be marvelous. I would like to do a large buy for the muslin upfront - that way we can get a really good deal on good quality muslin.
I am not sure how long each section will run as it will depend on class size and also the skill level. There will be a nominal charge to cover the space and also the instructor's time. You will be able to pay on a weekly basis or for the entire section for a slightly reduced rate. Fabric will need to be purchased and prepped ahead of time.

Now give me you feedback. What do you think? What is a class like this worth to you? You will receive personalized classes in learning to sew, professional help with fitting and an environment that will be fun and relaxed. And when it's all said and done your new Dickens clothing will be completed and already approved.
Plus - they don't call it a stitch and bitch for nothing! "Therapy" and opinions will be offered up for free! <grin>

IMPORTANT: this is not just for season sewers. I believe that everyone can learn to sew. You will need a sewing machine - we will have extras at the class but having one at home will be great to keep the classes moving. I am researching the ability for people to rent or borrow machines as well.

Hello,
My hoopskirt has a very annoying tendency of slipping lower and lower throughout the day no matter how tightly I tie the drawstring!
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might be able to attach it to my corset or skirt layers so that it can't slip about? I thought about a hook and eye closure, but I'm not sure I want to sew that onto my corset... Or maybe a drawstring through the eyelets in the back? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sarah,

You are not alone. DCF wk#3 my friend Miss S. came out in her new dress and unmanageable hoops and we discussed it as I redressed her after she bought her first Dark Garden corset. Since my hoops, corset and camera were still on the floor from the weekend, I took these snaps this morning to show my solution to hoop stability control. (forgive the image quality, I took them of myself)

1.	(see picture 1 posted to the photos section) Yes, put it on a real waistband with hooks at different waist sizes to give you options. (heavy vs. light skirts, swiss belt, jacket, bodice…all these will require minor adjustments as to where the hoops ride)

2.	Don’t try to wear them at the waist for two reasons: first off, they will slide to the top of the hip bone, so just plan for them there—and more importantly—you want to minimize the bulk around the waist to look as small as possible.

3.	(see picture 2) notice that I split the opposite side seam and have hooks on both sides to make it easier to get in and out of. Also notice how short the distance is from the waistband to the first rung. I shortened the over all length of the hoops from the top to give a fuller/rounder shape…and I am only 5’2”.

4.	(see picture 3) this is a close-up of the hooks

5.	(see picture 4) take a few stitches to hold each rung at the desired width so they do not collapse with the weight of the skirts, and tuck both ends into the casing to keep them from poking you

6.	ding-dong characters are great, ding-dong hoops are not: if you find yours swaying too much, wear a small bustle pad under the hoops to brace them against your butt. (this is a period solution to the problem)

7.	Lastly, wear a fluffy petticoat over your hoops to avoid unsightly VHR—Visible Hoop Rung—19th c. equivalent of VPL

Everybody sing *I like being a girl*

Here is a link to their site: http://www.columbiacalifornia.com/fancy.html . It may be too late for some of you to get up there this year but think about going up next spring, or summer. Call first to make sure that they are open. I went by a couple of weeks ago and they were on vacation. Lindy knows her fabric and pretty much only stocks period prints.

These shoes have never been worn, in-fact they have never been laced up; for the laces still reside in their place when stocked on a shelf. The soles and heels are immaculate shape and I have been informed the the seller would like $60, or best offer; which is a really good price! Only problem is one toe has a few smal scuffs, but nothing I don't think that will polish out.

The dimensions of the sole are 9 1/2" length, by 3 1/8"; so they might be a size 7 or 6 1/2.

The shoes are at the Costumers Tent backstage with Liz Martin. If you are interested please sit down and try them on, please do not walk around in them unless there is a carpet or something else underneath them to protect the soles. All I ask is to please be extra careful when doing so, for I would really hate to see them damaged.
