shawl time

I know, I know, it's only May, and it's too early to be thinking about Dickens. However, if any of y'all are interested in commissioning me to knit you a shawl, it's probably time to start planning. I can make plain working-class shawls and fancy ladies' shawls. I've got a copy of Victorian Lace Today and I'm not afraid to use it!

Last month I finally finished my Paisley Long Shawl. It's not, strictly speaking, a Victorian pattern, but it's inspired by the woven paisley shawls that the Victorians liked. NOT that I'm saying that I'm chomping at the bit to make another one (it was, er, difficult), but this it's a good example of what I can do.

Anyway, send me a PM if you're interested.

GONE WITH THE WIND BALL

Here's yet another opportunity to dress up or to create your Gone with the Wind dream costume.

Since we've already been asked this question, ladies, If you've always wanted to make Scarlett's barbecue dress or the Green Curtain Dress, or Melanie's cherry-trimmed grey organdy, or even Scarlett's Notorious Red Dress (it's a sort of 1930's version of an 1870's bustle dress but we're very broad-minded!), here's the perfect opportunity. As our Scarlett and Melanie will be dressed in deep mourning, they have no absolutely no objection to any of their fellow guests making copies of anything in their wardrobes! So have fun!

On the other hand, we would take it as a personal favor if no one showed up in a Yankee uniform!

And here's our latest ball write-up:

THE GONE WITH THE WIND BALL
Ball Website: http://peers.org/gwtw.html

Join us for the ultimate 19th century romantic fantasy experience - a ball inspired by the Charity Ball in Atlanta from the first part of Gone with the Wind.

Bangers & Mash plays an evening of exquisite waltzes and quadrilles, lively polkas and schottisches, mazurka waltzes, breathless reels and contradances popular in both the North and the South during the American Civil War. There will be a pre-ball dance lesson at 7:00 pm and, as usual, all set dances will be briefly taught or called.

Suggested costume is mid-Victorian evening dress (1850’s or ‘60’s) or modern evening dress. European or Southern gentlemen in uniform are also most welcome. As usual, however, costumes are admired, not required.

Punch and a light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening (Your potluck contributions to the buffet during these difficult times are greatly appreciated!).
Fabric choices for Ball Gowns

Hi, I am pretty new at making costumes myself, and also pretty new at Dickens. I want to make a ball dress to wear at Fezziwigs, and I while I have the pattern/s picked out, I was wondering what kind of fabric would be a good chioce. Is sateen too simple? I do not want to go looking too rich, so silk is out anyway. Did they have shantung? What about taffeta or silk taffeta, or Baroque satin? Im also on a tight budget, but I have a Joann store right by me, with 50% sales etc. What about velveteen? I have looked online and found several beautiful gowns, but it doesnt always say what fabric they are made of. I'm going for historical accuracy as much as I am able to as a beginner seamstress, and I do know quite a bit about the time period in general.

And can you tell me what colors were appropriate for a girl of 23 in that time? (I have red hair, so pink is kind of out, or red.

aside from the above 40 min. segment it has been asked that we walk around a bit at the beginning of the event. (8:30 am- 10:50 am. you do not need to stay any later than 10:50)

if you are interested in participating please contact me asap. through tribe or by phone (916) 770-9892

CHICAGO ALL-THAT-JAZZ BALL

Just in case you costumers were dying to create one of those stunning costumes from the movie "Chicago," here's your opportunity - and a good shot at getting a free Lee Presson & the Nails CD, too!

THE CHICAGO ALL-THAT-JAZZ BALL
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: San Mateo Masonic Temple
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue, San Mateo
Doors Open: 6:45 p.m.
Vintage Dance Lesson: 7:00- 8:00 pm.
Formal Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: Lee PressOn and the Nails
Tickets: $15.00 in advance (by April 26); $20.00 at the door
Ball Website: http://peers.org/chicago.html

Rouge your knees, roll your stockings down, start the car, and come join us and host Billy Flynn, Esquire, at the hottest party in Chicago for All That Jazz! PEERS is proud (and truly amazed) to announce that the evening's band will be the one, the only, the incomparable Lee Presson and the Nails.

1920’s or 30’s costume or vintage or modern evening dress (white or black tie optional) is admired, but not required. The year is 1931 but we won't hold you to that.

The music will range from elegant vintage ballroom dance music (waltzes, tangos, fox trots, and even polkas!) to cool blues and hot Swing of the 1920's and early ‘30's – perhaps with a few musical surprises along the way. For guests wishing to brush up on their vintage dance skills, there will be a pre-ball dance lesson in vintage Foxtrot and Swing at 7:00 p.m. with Persephone and Charles. Even if you’re a novice, they’ll soon have you gliding along the floor like young Fred Astaire and swinging like a gate.

Intermission entertainment includes both a half-time floor show and DJ dance music for you insatiable dancers. To fortify us for these vigorous dance sets, a complimentary light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening. (In our current Depression, your potluck contributions are always appreciated!).

Special Announcement from Mr. Lee Presson himself: “The first 100 people who attend the May Chicago Ball will get a free Lee Presson and the Nails CD.”

To order advance tickets, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online via PayPal, please go to the ball website at http://peers.org/chicago.html, scroll down, and click on the PayPal icon for instructions. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 each.

For information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org.

From Joann Peterson

Before steel cage hoop skirts were invented in 1857 ladies wore a
horsehair or corded petticoat under their other petticoats to help hold
out their skirts. Barbara Muran is putting on a corded petticoat class
in Sacramento on May 4th, 2008. The cost is $50 and will be held in her
community's Club House, which is a wonderful venue. Contact Barb at
barb@ofcorset.com
to receive a flyer and to sign up. Check out her website at
www.ofcorset.com
ABOUT: The Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade is a
fantasy event of unique character and inspiration. Costumes or formal wear and mask are required to enter the event. Costumes range from faeries and goblins to beautiful Victorian garb, elaborate armors, and period attire along with a host of fantasy creatures and characters. We encourage imagination and diverse interaction. Each year, Sypher Art Studios hosts the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade to pay homage to our inspirations and submerge our patrons in a special night of art, music, dance and enchantment.

A GLIMPSE WITHIN: The Masquerade:
Eyes wander across sculpted displays and fantastic imagery in the royal halls. Lords and ladies dance under fey enchantment while reality fades into the night. Imagination gains precious breath as winged faeries and darkened wanderers step through the crowds, joining the revels. We offer a unique chance to lose yourself within the ambiance of the Dreaming Court as the outside world fades into a surrealistic dream.

Save the Cow Palace & the Dickens Faire

URGENT MESSAGE FROM RED BARN PRODUCTIONS ABOUT
THE DICKENS FAIR AND THE COW PALACE

State Senator Leland Yee Ph.D., under pressure
from the Daly City Council, is proposing to
“surplus” the Cow Palace and sell it to Daly
City. Daly City will then sell most of the land
to condo developers and pocket the
profits. Letter writing WILL stop this. Senator
Yee has ONLY heard from Daly City. Let him know
you oppose selling the Cow Palace!!!

Here is a link to Senator Yee's website and his
press release on the legislation he submitted
Friday February 22nd to the State Legislature,
(no voting date is set - but it could be
soon). This bill wrongly proposes to SELL the Cow Palace to Daly City!
<dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp

We must defeat SB1527 or the Dickens Fair will likely die.
It would take years, if it’s even possible, to
relocate and resurrect the Dickens Fair.
Red Barn Productions has studied all the venues
that could physically host the Dickens Fair and
there are NO other places that currently
work. All are either too expensive, too small,
are unavailable between Thanksgiving and
Christmas OR require unaffordable retrofits in
order to be permitted for public assembly. So,
Save the Cow Palace and Save The Dickens Fair. It's that simple AND
serious.

Here's the scoop:

The Cow Palace has a perfectly good plan to meet
the needs of the local community and Daly City by
providing them 13 acres of its’ unused
land. Yes, rock concerts bring public problems,
according to Daly City, but they also bring
public $$$ to the local community. Senator Yee's
Legislation SB1527 is doubly wrong. It proposes
we, as California State Citizens, sell OUR Cow
Palace to Daly City so they can bulldoze it and
profit by selling it to private developers. If
that isn't bad enough, SB1527 also deprives us of
our RIGHT to use a facility that WE own!!

This is like selling off a chunk of Golden Gate
Park because a nearby neighborhood proclaims
“unanimously” it needs more space for
development. It doesn't work that way. We get
to vote too...by writing letters and emails and
calling his office. Officials can't just decide
to take a public asset and sell it…unless it is
truly “surplus”. The Cow Palace is not
“surplus”. We must stop this proposed sell-off of our property.

Here's what you can do to stop SB1527 and SAVE THE COW PALACE:

#1 Act Quickly. Senator Yee may believe he is
serving the public, but he has only heard from
Daly City. Let’s give him the other 99% of the
picture before he gets any further down this road.

Write a Letter
Write to Senator Yee today. Quickly. Early
letters are more powerful. Send personal letters
to the address below the sample text at the
bottom of this notice. Get it in today’s mail, so
he receives it on Monday or Tuesday.

Write an Email
Personal emails may be sent via his website
“contact” at page:
<legplcms01.lc.ca.gov/PublicL...pup.aspx

Emails are not as good as snail mail letters, but
they are also effective. Be sure to write in
“SB1527” as it is so new it is not on his issue list. …

Call the Office
You can pick up the phone and call his office,
see
<dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp

YOU DO NOT NEED TO MENTION THE DICKENS
FAIR. SIMPLY VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION TO
SB1527. That’s it! Give reasons only if you
want. The important thing is to contact him NOW.

#2 IF YOU LOVE THE DICKENS FAIR, forward this
message to groups, friends and individuals and
ask them to contact Senator Yee immediately.

#3 IF YOU LIVE in Senator Yee’s District #8 - see
map on his site:
…Contact him AS one of his constituents,
(District 8 includes most of San Francisco in the
West and South, and goes most of the way down the
Peninsula). It is a very large district!

Sample Letter:

Dear Senator Yee,

As a California Citizen, and resident of (…your
city…), I object to your proposed legislation to
“sell the California Cow Palace”. While you may
be responding to the needs of Daly City, please
respect my rights to use this public
facility. It may need work, but how many
California public buildings need upgrading? If
you want to help Daly City bring in new
supermarkets and shopping to the area, let the
Cow Palace deal directly with developers and Daly
City to make use of the 13 acres the Cow Palace
doesn't need. This will preserve my rights while
helping the lives of local area citizens. It
will also continue the flow of millions of
dollars into the local economy annually. These
revenues, generated by me and many thousands of
others who use the Cow Palace, also help pay for
police to patrol the area year-round as well as during big events.

Please reconsider SB1527. There is a better way
to help Daly City and Bayshore than destroying
the Cow Palace. I use it every year and plan to
continue to use it for many years to come. It is
not “surplus”; it is a vital community and cultural asset.

Thank you,

Signed,

(you)

Mail letter to both his office addresses:

Are Heidi Braids actually right for the Victorian time period? It's the only way I'm used to wearing my hair up, and I've decided to find out the truth about it now, so that I have time to come up with something else before November (these things take me a while). So, does anyone know anything about it? :)

A Modest Proposal

I've always known that from a costuming standpoint, I have been blessed to live in the greater Los Angeles area. Sure, every major urban area (like the SFO Bay area) has its collection of fabric, sewing notion, and thrift stores... But with the exception of New York, nowhere in the United States has the sheer breadth and depth of resources that L.A. does. The Los Angeles "garment district" downtown has square blocks of fabric and sewing supplies at prices that are well below half of typical retail. This includes a whole block of buttons, beads, and jewelry findings; major "tailoring supply" houses with fine woolens (www.bblackandsons.com)(and a "remnant" table); dozens of outlets for ribbon, trim, and lace; and fabric stores ranging from cheap cottons to upholstery grade silks and leather.

Outside the garment district are other resources...amazing vintage, used, and thrift clothing stores (Aardvark's!)...one-stop shops for theatrical makeup on Hollywood Blvd...International Silks and Woolens...great upholstery fabric outlets near Western & Melrose...Western Costume out in the valley....and of course, Farthingale's for your corset and hoop supplies in Santa Monica.

I'd always thought that more of my friends from the Dickens fair ought to get down here to use the resources....but to be fair, it is a long way to drive and if you don't know the town....it can be quite a learning curve to find what you are looking for....

But what if you could get from SFO to LA (and return) for $35 or less (without having to drive)? Might it be worth it then?
How about if you had a native guide who could show you around the garment district on a one or two day expedition?

If there were a few folks who might be interested in such a trip in March, I might be of a mind to sketch out the details and offer to help with coordination. Of course, if some of our LA Dickens brethern would like to join in the madness... That might be fun too.

Fitting for New Dress

I attended Dickens this past December in a borrowed costume, and promptly came home to order an appropriate pattern and fabric. Yeah!

I do not have a proper corset - yet. Is it pointless for me to begin my dress until I have the corset? Having not worn one before, I don't know how much different the fitting will be.

There is a local corsetry class that I'm planning on taking, but that's not until at least August, and I'd like to start on my dress before then if I can. The sooner I start, the more time I have for all the details!

Am I better off just buying a corset for starters? (esp. since there's a sale going on?) Thanks!

Hi all....

Some of you may remember my niece, Harper, who helped out in costumes in '04 & '05 before moving to North Carolina. Well, she's finally able to be on Tribe, and has joined this tribe - if you remember her, please say hi - we're hoping she can move back to the Bay Area in early '08.

Thanks for your time and attention, and Happy Christmas.

Best Regards,

So, I'm finding myself without footwear for this year. Last year's boots won't work anymore, seeing as the sole on one of them was completely split by the end of the run. Now it's crunch time, and I've been so preoccupied with getting the rest of my garb together that I'd all but forgotten about the footwear I need.

Therefore, if anyone has boots they would like to sell or just get rid of, I'll gladly take them. I tend to wear size 8 1/2 and upwards, but nothing more than a 10 -- last year's were a size 10, and they were a little roomy. I'll take wide sizes, too; in fact, that's probably even better.

I'd like to have them before this Saturday, if possible; but early Sunday morning is doable, too. Please PM me if you're able to help me out.

Thanks!

Costume constrcution classes to start soon

So now that we've all put away our Dickens and the Christmas stuff - are you ready to start thinking about DCF 2008?
Here's the tentative line up for classes;

Chemise and Drawers
Hoop skirt/petticoat
Corset
Garibaldi blouse
Skirt
Swiss belt
Dress
Classes in men's items will be coming as well as a class on distressing clothing and over hauling thrift store finds.
I have talked with Lynn Combs and it looks like Wed nights will be the best. She has graciously offered us space at Vallejo Musical Theater. We'd start at 6:30 or 7 and going till 10 each night. If we can pull it all together starting in mid Feb would be marvelous. I would like to do a large buy for the muslin upfront - that way we can get a really good deal on good quality muslin.
I am not sure how long each section will run as it will depend on class size and also the skill level. There will be a nominal charge to cover the space and also the instructor's time. You will be able to pay on a weekly basis or for the entire section for a slightly reduced rate. Fabric will need to be purchased and prepped ahead of time.

Now give me you feedback. What do you think? What is a class like this worth to you? You will receive personalized classes in learning to sew, professional help with fitting and an environment that will be fun and relaxed. And when it's all said and done your new Dickens clothing will be completed and already approved.
Plus - they don't call it a stitch and bitch for nothing! "Therapy" and opinions will be offered up for free! <grin>

IMPORTANT: this is not just for season sewers. I believe that everyone can learn to sew. You will need a sewing machine - we will have extras at the class but having one at home will be great to keep the classes moving. I am researching the ability for people to rent or borrow machines as well.

Please reply to the Dickens costume construction tribe for this post!

What's the best way for space saving health of my sanity? Is there any way the two can meet? :) Thanks in advance,

Hello,
My hoopskirt has a very annoying tendency of slipping lower and lower throughout the day no matter how tightly I tie the drawstring!
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might be able to attach it to my corset or skirt layers so that it can't slip about? I thought about a hook and eye closure, but I'm not sure I want to sew that onto my corset... Or maybe a drawstring through the eyelets in the back? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hoopskirt attachment -- an answer

Sarah,

You are not alone. DCF wk#3 my friend Miss S. came out in her new dress and unmanageable hoops and we discussed it as I redressed her after she bought her first Dark Garden corset. Since my hoops, corset and camera were still on the floor from the weekend, I took these snaps this morning to show my solution to hoop stability control. (forgive the image quality, I took them of myself)

1.	(see picture 1 posted to the photos section) Yes, put it on a real waistband with hooks at different waist sizes to give you options. (heavy vs. light skirts, swiss belt, jacket, bodice…all these will require minor adjustments as to where the hoops ride)

2.	Don’t try to wear them at the waist for two reasons: first off, they will slide to the top of the hip bone, so just plan for them there—and more importantly—you want to minimize the bulk around the waist to look as small as possible.

3.	(see picture 2) notice that I split the opposite side seam and have hooks on both sides to make it easier to get in and out of. Also notice how short the distance is from the waistband to the first rung. I shortened the over all length of the hoops from the top to give a fuller/rounder shape…and I am only 5’2”.

4.	(see picture 3) this is a close-up of the hooks

5.	(see picture 4) take a few stitches to hold each rung at the desired width so they do not collapse with the weight of the skirts, and tuck both ends into the casing to keep them from poking you

6.	ding-dong characters are great, ding-dong hoops are not: if you find yours swaying too much, wear a small bustle pad under the hoops to brace them against your butt. (this is a period solution to the problem)

7.	Lastly, wear a fluffy petticoat over your hoops to avoid unsightly VHR—Visible Hoop Rung—19th c. equivalent of VPL

Everybody sing *I like being a girl*

I'm looking to purchase a walking cane/stick for my hubby. Can anyone tell me where I might find one in the bay area?

If there are any Fair Folk looking to sell a used one that's in good condition please let me know.

Many thanks!

Several of us were working on some real "low" costumes on Monday night!

Found that Rit black dye in a spray bottle did a great job of getting that sooty look, plus with some latex gloves, spraying it on your hands allowed us to really dirty up the lapels, collars, buttons and hats.

Now I just need a pole for my chimney sweep and I'm in! Kind of looking forward to raising a sooty dust cloud at the fair! :)

Period fabric source

After so many compliments on the fabric that my dress is made out of I decided to go by the shop today and get the biz card (I also got more fabric for a new outfit). The Fancy Dry Goods adn Clothing Store is in Columbia State Park, which is near Sonora in the Sierra foothills off of highway 108. Here is a link to their site: http://www.columbiacalifornia.com/fancy.html . It may be too late for some of you to get up there this year but think about going up next spring, or summer. Call first to make sure that they are open. I went by a couple of weeks ago and they were on vacation. Lindy knows her fabric and pretty much only stocks period prints.

For sale Black Victorian/Edwardian Ladies/young girls shoes $60 or best offer!

I'm selling a pair of Victorian/Edwardian black lace up shoes that are Deadstock for a friend. These shoes have never been worn, in-fact they have never been laced up; for the laces still reside in their place when stocked on a shelf. The soles and heels are immaculate shape and I have been informed the the seller would like $60, or best offer; which is a really good price! Only problem is one toe has a few smal scuffs, but nothing I don't think that will polish out.

The dimensions of the sole are 9 1/2" length, by 3 1/8"; so they might be a size 7 or 6 1/2.

The shoes are at the Costumers Tent backstage with Liz Martin. If you are interested please sit down and try them on, please do not walk around in them unless there is a carpet or something else underneath them to protect the soles. All I ask is to please be extra careful when doing so, for I would really hate to see them damaged.

Thank you for your time,
Jeffrey Jenkins

Ok, so now that I figured out my hair I decided to make a new skirt as well.

I'm trying to make a skirt for my hoop outfit and since it has a pattern I want it fairly fitted.
So my question is....How much give should I leave compared to the hoop?

And since the hoop is a bell shape not an A-Line.....any tips on cutting it?

Thanks everyone!!!

The 1850s start here, followed by the 1860s: http://demodecouture.com/realvict/1800s2.html#1850
It is a red and creme plaid. Sized to fit a 5-8 year old. Size 6-8?
It was made by Heidi Schultz about 3 years ago and is in great condition. There is also a bonnet that goes with it. I will have it this weekend at the Palace of Cow in the Paddy West breezeway. I paid $300 to have it made and the workmanship is terrific. Any reasonable offer will be accepted.

Shoulder placement?

Ok, here's a question for all those in the know...
I am currently having a gown made for this year, and I have worn other Dickens costumes in the past. They all have the "dropped shoulders", where the arm hole seems so much lower than our modern arm holes, as though the seam is riding right along where your shoulder bone meets your arm... if that makes any sense!
Just curious if all the shoulders should be dropped like that? Presuming it is period, and that is fine... just wasn't sure if one could have the arm holes placed higher up, as we have now. Makes for it being a smidge more comfortable, but naturally, it needs to be period.
Comfort is for the weak...
I had heard that it had something to do with the fact that ladies of the time (middle-upper class is what I portray, member of the Adventurers Club) had no need to be raising their arms up and moving their upper torso about, thus they simply designed the dresses to make it not as easy to do.
Let me know what's what!

I'm new to Dickens this year and it's been a bit daunting for me. My directors have been as helpful as they can be with their own busy schedules but still I was starting to feel a bit lost, and panic was setting in for sure. I went to workshops on Sunday with a trunk full of clothes I had bought in the hopes that something in there might just work for costumes. I was nervous because of all that I'd heard about how strict the costume requirements are, and how strict the costume approval people can be.

I have to say that so far Liz and her team are the most welcoming group of people that I've encountered so far at Dickens. They took the time to go through my big trunk with me, answer all my questions and point me in the right direction. I had missed the costume workshop because of the change in schedule that I was unaware of, and Liz kindly offered to tell me what I needed to know. It was clear that the costume people were working hard and non-stop all day doing what they do, not even taking the time to eat! And so I wanted to tell you, the people of tribe, that Liz and her team are amazing awesome and wonderful people! They made this newbie feel at home for the first time yet, and of all the things I'm stressing about trying to pull together, my costume is not one of those things anymore.

Thanks for all your help, Liz. But most importantly, thanks for your kindness and welcoming attitude!

Hoop skirt question

Does anyone have advice on where to buy a hoop skirt in the East Bay or S.F? I would also take recommendations for online sellers -- I know here are a number of hoops being sold on eBay , but I'd kind of like to be able to try on various sizes under my dress.

Also, under a thin skirt, is it better to wear a hoop skirt with a tulle overlay (or an additional petticoat) so the hoops don't show through, or is it acceptable to see the bones through the skirt?

Thanks!

Frock Coat help...

I have been working on a single breasted frock coat from Period Impressions for the past 3-4 weeks for my Phileas Fogg costume. Needless to say it has been a painful process. These patterns were created by some Grand Inquisitor...I'm sure of it! Anyway...I finished most of the work, but when I tried it on, there were a couple of parts here and there that just weren't sitting right - and I'm not sure how to fix them.

It's not major work, but it is some modifications that are beyond my currently stressed-out abilities. I think it's a pretty coat, it just needs a little skilled labor.

Is there anyone out there who may have a little time to take a look...and perhaps help me fix the coat? Pretty please!? With sugar on top!??

*assumes begging stance*

My brown felt bonnet that I wear with my green dress is really quite squashed. The brim is no longer what you would call round. It's more like "dented". Is there any way to re-shape a felt hat? Last year I tried to steam it and coax it into a rounder shape, but it didn't take.

Hi there! I'm new to Dickens Fair this year and I'm struggling with putting together a costume and character. I would like to play a maid to an upper class or upper middle class family. I have not been able to find many photos of what style of apron, shoes and hat would be appropriate for my character. Any suggestions of where to find good pictures of the serving class of people, or suggestions for what styles I should be looking for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated since the costuming is my biggest obstacle right now. I really want to do this, and do it right! THANK YOU from the bottom of my newbie heart!

I am almost sure I have seen similar contrasting collars at fair. Is a contrasting single-color collar acceptable?

Online Questions & Discussions
Summary

Introduction
Hello everyone. My name is Liz Martin and I will be the costume director for the 2007 Dickens Fair. Assisting me will be Alexandria Volk and Juliana Bradley, plus several “surprise” guest costumers! I am thrilled to be working with all of you in this capacity. Please have patience with me as this is my first year and I am still figuring out what all goes into this position!

I have heard through the grapevine that the position of costume director for Dickens is difficult and challenging, as well as one to be feared by those that are non-costumers. I am hoping that all of you will assist me in making this as unstressed and drama-free as possible. How can you do this? By following the costume guidelines!

There is no reason to be afraid of us – unless you are NOT following the costume guidelines. Even then, I would prefer that you not find us frightening, but merely firm in carrying out our duty and commitment to the overall look of the show.

Dickens Fair is a unique theatrical animal. We are a collection of volunteer performers who are attempting to recreate and populate the London that Mr. Charles Dickens created in his works. If this is your first year, you will find it to truly be an ensemble cast effort. And yes, what you wear really matters. The costumes are the biggest part of the scenery – what you are wearing is what will set the time period in the eye of our customers.

My job, as I see it, is to keep the continuity of the production flowing and to make sure that there is an even and homogenized look to the fair.

So how does this translate to you, the performer?
1) There is a dress code and a time line.
2) We are going for the rule – NOT the exception
3) We want you to be comfortable in your costume
4) Yes, you have to conform!
5) Have fun!
6) There is NO CROSS DRESSING
(the one exception is Jeremy, who has worked for many years to perfect his costume, character and make-up. Some departments may have one or two women dressed in pants for safety reasons)

Costume Approval: All participants in the fair (cast members, employees, volunteers, door mice, helper cats) must receive costume approval before receiving their pass. To reiterate: registration forms must be stamped with costume approval in order to receive a gate pass.

Tentative Costume Approval Schedule
We, Liz Martin and her associates, will be available the first Saturday of workshops immediately following the morning meeting (but possibly with a slight delay for a bathroom break) for approvals and questions, until 1:15 and then from 2:45 until 5:00pm.

On Sunday the schedule will be from 10:15 to 1:15 and then from 2:45 to 5:00pm.

The second weekend schedule is still uncertain so for now is TBA.

Approval will also take place during Dress Rehearsal Weekend at the Cow Palace. Times will be decided and posted later for that weekend.

Costume Guidelines
Everyone at the fair must wear clothing that would lead the casual observer to believe that you just stepped out of London from the period between the years 1844 and1860.

How we achieve this is by keeping to a certain silhouette for both the women and the men.

NOTE: These are very generalized. This is intended to give you a quick OVERVIEW of what we are looking for. There are of course class differences and character traits that will cause there to be differing clothing items. For a more in-depth version of this – please feel free to come to the costume classes at workshops or visit the website at
www.dickensfair.com/costumeguide.htm
If you have any questions after reading the info on the Dickens website,
please feel free to contact us at
costumes@redbarnproductions.com or dickenscostumes@gmail.com

Women:
Colors – jewel tones, NO BLACK (unless Mr. Dickens wrote you in black). Plaids are wonderful, again in the darker jewel tones, & patterned cotton fabrics are also acceptable, (please let me see the swatch BEFORE you start sewing!) Hoops or petticoats, long sleeves, a relatively high neckline, some sort of outerwear, gloves and a bonnet or hat will complete your basic Dickens outfit quite nicely. NO BUSTLES, please, they are not appropriate to our time period.

Men:
Pants- high-waisted is preferred, wool, either plaid, striped or plain
Vest/waistcoat - can be collared or not but should not have points in the front and does not, generally, match either the pants or the jacket,
Jacket – does not always have to match the pants, in the case of a sack suit all three pieces would match.
Shirt – for laborers can be striped or colored, clerks and upper class (A Gentleman) would wear white, add a cravat.
With the addition of outwear: gloves, scarf, and a HAT – again the ensemble is completed.

Fabric and Pattern Selection
Remember, the years that the Dickens Fair covers are 1844 - 1860, so jewel colors and deep, rich tones are good, and no fluorescent, overwhelming pastels, or teal colors. Plaids and stripes are great, but do not to use lightweight fabrics like madras or seersucker. Feel free to send scanned swatches of fabric, sketches, or snaps of out-of-print patterns for approval or advice. If you have construction questions, those are welcome as well.

There is a list of acceptable patterns and some notes on them later in this email

Make-Up
Women in the 19th century liked to be thought of as fragile ladies. They aimed always to look pale which was achieved by staying inside and out of the harsh sun. Rouge was rarely used and lipstick unheard of, make-up in general was frowned upon. Actresses or “those women down at the docks” used make up such as powder and lipstick but a lady would only admit to pinching her cheeks for a flush of natural glow. Women in the upper classes would even paint small blue lines on themselves to look even more translucent while wearing the low cut ball gown.

That said…

Please use makeup. The Dickens fair is aglow with unnatural lighting to emulate perpetual twilight. That makes many people look blank or like they are eyebrow-less. I suggest using makeup a shade darker than your natural color at your most healthy looking. If you are blonde you may want to use an eyebrow pencil to darken your brows. If you are stage, please use appropriate stage makeup. Consult with your director at dress rehearsal to find the best fit for you. If you are middle class (most of London) please still attempt to look “natural ” with your makeup.

Morning Checklist
Please, do develop a morning checklist and go over it each day before you leave your home. We love you and want you to look beautiful (or handsome as the case may be) but please remember that poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on our part.

Emergencies
Of course if there is a rip or tear during the day we will be more than happy to lend a hand – or needle- to put you back in one piece. I strongly encourage both men and women to have duplicates for those items worn closest to the skin (shirts/blouses, chemises, drawers/bloomers) as well as an extra pair of socks. That way you can
make it through the weekend without taking anything home.

So you still need a costume . . .
There will be various vendors selling costumes at workshops. There is a good chance that you will be able to put together an entire ensemble. If you have any question on whether or not your choice might not pass costume approval – just bring it over to me!

I know that Lynn Combs will have men’s clothing – you can generally purchase an entire man’s outfit for around $200. (This is just an estimate - prices may have gone up from last year)!

Recommended Costumers
These talented costumers have been tested and are costumers who have continually built passable or more than passable costumes for our fair. Please be aware that all costumers set their own rate and any business you conduct together is not affiliated with the fair. ~ Liz
Online Costume Stores
I am working on compiling a list of acceptable websites where one can purchase approved Dickens clothing. IF you have ordered from a website, had a good experience AND passed costume approval – please email me the website and any other info you feel is pertinent.

Approved Patterns
I have looked at all of the following patterns and given my okay on them. I have, however, NOT made all of them! Juliana Bradley can vouch for quite a few as well as can Alexandria.

Which is the best? As far as the “Big 3” are concerned, I tend to prefer Simplicity to either Butterick or McCall’s.

Past Patterns, Laughing Moon, and Truly Victorian are wonderful pattern companies. Yes they are more expensive, but they are worth every penny!

Here are the currently available patterns that pass muster…
Rate The Patterns
If you have personally built a costume from any of these patterns we would love to hear about it! Please send us your review, including your name & experience level. Please rate it, on a scale of 1 – 5, 5 being the most difficult. Feel free to include a picture or two if you have them. The reviews will be posted to tribe in

Online Questions & Discussions
Speaking of Tribe, there are several areas on Tribe.net that are dedicated to Dickens Fair. “What to Wear to the Dickens Fair” is one of them. I do my best to visit all of the related sites on a regular basis to monitor questions regarding what is approvable. If you have any questions – please contact myself, or Alexandria at dickenscostumes@gmail.com
I can also be contacted thru Tribe with costuming questions – however there may be a slight delay if you send the questions that way as opposed to personal email.

Summary
This missive is not meant to be the end all in costuming information, it’s just the costume department’s way of touching base with all of you and letting you know what our expectations will be come Saturday.

I look forward to working with each and every one of you.

See you in London!

I have a beautiful BR creations waist cincher for sale... black brocade outside, peacock blue satin inside *and it's reversable*! I bought this from Romantasy several years ago & it's only been worn 3 or 4 times, for short length. So - like new, steel-boned, beautiful and very strong... but very tiny! I was a size 2-4 when I wore this.

Originally $425, and I would like $150 for it. PM me - I can bring it to workshops...

Do you want comp tickets? Do you want friends and family to come out
and play for free? Well, have I got a deal for you! 2 comp tickets are
yours for the low, low price of one 4-hour shift at the front gate,
taking tickets! The team of volunteers meeting, greeting, and taking
customer's tickets is an important, yet sometimes overlooked part of
the Faire. We are currently low in volunteer staff at the front gate
and are in need of more people to help out. If you are interested, we
would be glad to shamelessly bribe you by giving you 2 complimentary
tickets for each 4 hours worked.

Costume approval required. See following link for missives on workshops and costuming!

News from David Springhorn and family

http://tribes.tribe.net/fairefrienddisasterrelief

As Many of you know, David Springhorn and his family have lost their house and worldly possessions to the Fallbrook Fire. They are all fine and living with Marguerite's mother for now. The good news is the insurance will buy them a new home-- there will just be nothing to put in it. So go to the tribe above and see what you can do to make a difference. We are a devoted and loving sort and I think if we all band together we can make a difference. Also any monetary donation will be helpful. Any one who donates five dollars or more will be thanked by name on the Faire Friends California Disaster relief website-unless otherwise specified. If everyone gives five bucks we may be able to get then some household necessities. I say we should even set up a gift registry for them at Target or Something.

Fires are serious business people. Imagine having to leave home all over again. You have nothing but the clothes on your back and whatever you got to take from your parents house. I would not want to be there again. Plus they have two boys.

Should you wish to donate money to help David Marguerite and the family, we are able to do so now. The not for profit status is a process that takes a while, so in the meantime I have set up a trust account under Davids name.

To donate: Send a check to 925 Lakeville street suite 129 Petaluma CA 94952 Care of Kathy Kingman

Make checks out to Kathy Kingman T/F David Springhorn-- it is very important to have both names AND the T/F are on the check or I will not be able to deposit into the account.

Any cards or letters may be sent to me as well. Marguerite says they have No place to keep anything at this time, the only real mailing address is her work address. I will send any letters or mail to her when she gives me word.

How does the Trust work?
A trust fund is set up by one person for another who is either too young or unavailable in some way to do it themselves. In order to set up the fund, the first person uses their social security number to set up the structure of the account. Then a signature card is sent to the person who the account benefits. David and Marguerite are fully aware of the account and are very grateful for any help they receive. As promised, I will have a Paypal account set up by tomorrow for anyone who would like to donate via credit/bank card.

Bank of America also has the ability to accept transfers from other banks. I do not have the information on how to do that. You will need to speak with your bank.

Not enough fabric!!!

Hello, most awesome costume people in the world! So I found this beautiful purple and blue plaid twill fabric on ebay a while back and bought it. I have discovered that I only have enough to make a bodice...I was hoping to have enough for the bodice and a band of plaid around the skirt. I need some advice/ideas. So, I was thinking of make the bodice out of the plaid and having a solid purple skirts. I am planning on using Simplicity #3855 - which the bodice is more like a "jacket." Is it period to have a plaid bodice and solid skirt? If not, can someone give me ideas of how I can incorporate the plaid and have it be a proper period look? Oh, I'm a participant BTW. Thank for any help you can give. You can find a picture of the plaid fabric on my profile.

Thanks!
Jennifer

First time at Dickens

This is going to be the first time I have worked Dicken's Fair, and I have no idea what is apropriate. I am going to be working in a booth or volunteering. Are there any recomendations that can be made on what class, colors, style, or anything else that is needed? Also, is it easier to purchase a costume or make one? I am running on a low budget, so which ever is more economical, would be great.
For sale - Misc. Mens Victorian Garments

Man's Notch Collar Frock Coat in a tan, green & brown tweedy check wool blend fabric (50%). Nice pewter buttons all around. Three outside pockets, and one inside. Sold to me as a Men's 2X, it fits like a 3X or 4X (Omar the tent maker size) 28" across the back underarm-to-underarm, Sleave length from top of shoulder is 27" Professionally made coat by Brassada, it's been worn only to try it on. Great for middle class characters of *substantial* size.

Two Men's L half-button band-colar long sleave shirts for middle/lower class characters.
These are solid and professionally made, and not cheap home sewn garments. They have been worn, but not mistreated, and are clean, if a trifle wrinkled from storage.
- One is a blue & white vertical stripe cotton with solid white band collar and one patch (dungaree) pocket on the breast. (could be removed) By Wah Maker, well known maker of western wear for 19th century reenactors. Gunmetal balck buttons probably should be changed for pearl, bone, horn, or glass; but might pass costume inspection anyway.
-The other is Irish *linen flannel* in a green and tan vertical stripe with a matching band collar and an a very proper *inset* breast pocket that buttons. Plastic buttons that don't do a bad job of simulating horn buttons.

Make offer for an of these items that interest you.

I might have a few other items kicking around, but I'll have to look...

I'll be wearing a tux to fair this year...but would like to wear a period approval vest. A friend wants to make it for me. My character would be a lumber merchant from San Francisco (based on an actual ancestor). Would the American vests of that era be acceptable?
Thanks.

Obtanium: Ladies Costume Bits -- Free to a good home! (plus shipping)

Hello all,

Well, it's time to give up some old costumes and make room for the new ones I've yet to make! I've got two mostly complete outfits in slightly different sizes (reflecting my progressive weight loss over the past few years-- yeah!). Details are below, and I've posted photos of myself in the outfits in my pictures in my profile. The only catch is that I live in Southern CA and won't be able to make it to workshops. So I'm asking for $10 to cover the cost of shipping all of one outfit, or less if you only want individual bits. Contact me! We'll figure it out!

Outfit #1: green Christmas plaid skirt, 2 bodices, and accessories-- all in one (i.e. I won't send you individual bits, you get it all!)
Made from a 100% cotton X-mas plaid fabric, hunter green background with burgundy, cream, and fine metallic thread stripes. Trimmed in cream-colored eyelet lace and burgundy cotton bias tape, with faux poinsettias pinned to skirt near the hem.
Long sleeved bodice (day) has a mostly high neck (a bit of your collarbone will be visible), and has slightly belled sleeves, and a pointed V waistline. Waist 37.5", bust 45"
Short sleeved bodice (evening) is mostly made from dark green velvet, trimmed in the X-mas plaid with poofy plaid sleeves. Waist 37", bust 44", with about 3" of room to expand hidden in the seams
Skirt has a 36" waist with room to expand to ~39", is cut in a circle (i.e. not gathered), and the waist to hem is 40"
PLUS: matching drawstring reticule, cream lace doily with burgundy ribbon for hair, and faux poinsettias on pins to decorate the bodices a bit more

Other bits:
--Black Zouave jacket with burgundy lace trim on sleeves and soutache braid detail at bust, 46" chest
--White blo
